Learn from highly successful people!
Part 1 of 2 - leadership and life lessons from John C Maxwell
When I started GiFT631 I was fortunate enough to MC for some of the most successful leadership and personal success experts in the business. Jack Daly on sales, Robert Cialdini on Influence/Persausion, Sinek on lots of things starting with ‘why?’ and many others including John C Maxwell on leadership. Here are my notes from his masterclasses, split over 2 publications:
Personal growth is not automatic - what's your plan for growth?
If you want to influence people, first connect with them. How? Add value.
Serve others really well - exceed expectations
The law of the lid. If you are a 5/10 leader, your team/business will max out at 4/10.
When you elevate yourself, then help 10 others level up, you create a powerful multiplier effect.
Each year, strive to help every person on your team grow one level higher.
Apply, Change, Teach (when learning from a master, what 3 things will you apply, mark your notes A1, A2, A3, 3 things you will change and 3 things you will teach).
Listen very well - 'walk slowly through the crowd as they are closer to reality'
Lead by connection. If there is a big gap between you and your team, you are leading by assumption. Observe and listen well.
Coach people from where they are.
Culture (what you do) trumps vision (what you say you will do). You buy into a leader before you buy into a vision.
If you go to someone else's office, you can leave when you want.
Evaluated experience is the best teacher.
Leaders develop daily, not in a day.
Momentum is your best friend. When you have momentum, work harder! Train analogy: when a train has momentum it can crash through a 5 foot wide barricade, when it has no momentum it can not move past an inch block.
When you have momentum, the size of a problem is not an issue.
Momentum gives you credibility and attracts better people.
Lead by example: people do what people see.
Be a tour guide (with them, have expertise) not a travel agent (sending people where they have never been) leader.
Who do you know that I should know?
Be prepared to pass the baton at your peak/your fastest moment - most leaders stay too long. Move on just before you become tired and jaded.
Time is not redeemable. If you only give 80% today, you can't give 120% tomorrow to make it up. Therefore make everyday your masterpiece. Be fulfilled but not satisfied.
You can not fix what you are not aware of.
Everything worthwhile is uphill.
