London calling - let's talk mindset 'triggers.'
This topic has featured this week in my UK workshops - this week I share one powerful trigger that fires me into action!
When my daughter, Lucy, was 12, I asked her to create a screensaver for me. I described what I was looking for, but not how it needed to look exactly. She nailed it and I have kept this screensaver ever since.
Lucy gave me an image of two people, Bethany Hamilton and Nick Vujicic, surfing on the same board in Hawaii. They are clearly having fun and enjoying what they’re doing.
I asked Lucy why she had chosen this image, and she answered, “Well, Dad, if they can do that, you can do anything!”
Every time I turn on my laptop, I look at the image and I replay these words in my head. It serves as a constant reminder that I can achieve my SMUUT goals and achieve the life of my dreams. This helps me maintain a positive, can-do, action orientated mindset each day. During tough times, this screensaver helps me persevere and stop feeling sorry for myself (as we know the victim mindset, however temporary, does not help in anyway).
For those who don’t know Bethany and Nick, you may not understand why the image is so inspiring. At 13, while surfing, Bethany had her arm bitten off by a shark and Nick was born without arms and legs.
Here is the image:
This #giftbite brings it to life for you:
Either one of them could find many reasons to be sitting on the sidelines living with a victim (poor me) or cynical (why me?) mindset while feeling sorry for themselves. Yet they were living life to the fullest—100% in the player zone. They live with a true champions mindset.
I am a massive believer in visuals to support your goals and ideally the creation of your own vision board. Your screensaver will be one of the most frequently seen images in your daily life. Therefore, it is important to create something that’s powerful to you.
Be willing to keep changing your screensaver until you find the right image or collection of images. As soon as it loses impact, change it.
Questions for you:
What is your current screensaver? Your phone? Lap-top? Desk-top? Other devices?
What does it say to you every time you see it?
Does it inspire you to have a great day and make the most of the opportunities ahead?
Does it trigger a connection to one or more of your goals or bucket-list items?
Actions:
Take some Mozart time to think about an image or series of images that you could turn into a screensaver.
You may decide you want more than one to either rotate them or for different devices.
On one device you might want to keep a picture of your partner/family/pets - That’s cool!
Upload your chosen images onto your device or devices.
Journal why you chose this images or images and what it means to you. By doing this you are creating a deeper trigger for every time you see the image.
