Wow!
This week Manny Martinez guested on my client’s #dare2soar talent programme. Manny and I have never physically met but became friends via Linkedin and then zoom/teams. Manny’s life began in Puerto Rico, before he moved to Florida speaking little English before joining the US AirForce at an early age. 30 years later he left as a Chief Master Sergeant. Manny is now President of Relentless Leadership LLC, a part of Crestcom.
Manny always brings a wonderful smile, infectious positive energy and great insight to all he does. Here I capture some key learns and reflections from his wonderful session (drop me a note for Manny’s contact details or to explain a point further):
For certain people find a 'way to yes'.
Leadership is about service greater than yourself - pour yourself into others, as great leaders poured themselves into you.
Leadership is an honour and a privilege.
Make sure you impact someone’s life TODAY (and everyday!).
When in need, tuck others under your wing - help people grow and develop to reach their potential. Give people your tool-kit. No expectations in return.
Accept the people you help may do a better job than you. Acknowledge and value that. No ego.
Make connections - take the time and make the effort to get to know something about everybody, whoever they are and whatever do. Relationships are everything.
Do you know everybody in your business?
Approach people with no agenda.
You don’t know everything, even as a leader.
‘Mess up, fess up, move forward.’ Be prepared to make mistakes. Own your mistakes. Learn from your mistakes. Move on.
SMILE.
Right v relationship. What do you value most in this instance? Being right today or the long-term relationship.
‘I don’t want to be the best communicator of apology emails.’
Humility and park the egos.
Walk the walk and talk the talk. Set the standards, model the behaviours. Cook the turkey!
Empower the team through delegation.
Evidence you care through providing strong feedback.
To lead others, take good care of yourself - avoid cutting corners regarding yourself-care. Have a routine to help you feel fresh and in a good space.
To manage ‘higher ups’ - role model the expected behaviours in your role. Always do the right thing. Stay true to your values. Go with ideas - problem solve for them. What might they be thinking over? Help them with that. Do the little extras without asking and expecting to be noticed (over time they will be).
Live gratitude - the changing of the leaves, the colour of the sky, the small and wonderful interactions (think Ian).
