The big 5 learnings from Malcolm McDowell
The leader who helped me aim high, have courage and soar to new heights.
Early in my business career, I was fortunate to work for a dynamic, big thinking, demanding and supportive leader who taught me many powerful lessons I keep with me to this day. I have summarised what I regard as the top 5:
🔥Do the job you are doing today as if you are doing it forever. Then you make the ‘right decision’ not the easy decision, you avoid papering over cracks and you get to the root cause of issues. You put in a sustainable solution. You think both short and long term. You ensure you get the best people you can find/afford on your team (& help those with a poor attitude, energy and passion move on). You think about finding, developing and providing opportunities to your ‘talent.’
🔥Grow not swell. Your ego is the enemy of achievement. The day you believe in your own BS is the day you stop listening and learning. Be open to ideas, regardless of their source and maintain a constant passion to improve you, your team and business. Actively listen!
🔥Quoting from Helen Keller: 'life is a daring adventure.......or nothing at all.' Aim high, have fun and go for it. Be brave and understand the risk of winning. Live an action orientated life. This courageous approach to business includes taking a risk on people: putting them in a coat that is too big…………and watching/helping them grow into it (exactly what he did with me).
🔥Leave no one behind as long as they have a positive attitude and want to be part of a winning team. The strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack.
🔥Malcolm is the person for whom ‘no means yes and impossible means probable’. You must believe there is always a way! Believe that close to every closed door there is an open window. Keep looking. Keep going. Persistence matters.
