'Why do so many people fall so far short of their potential?'
That's a big question to start a podcast interview
This morning I had the pleasure and privilege of guesting on the Small Business, Big Impact podcast. This is the pod for the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand.
My host, the highly skilled journalist Gillian Bowen, only had 20 minutes or so for the full programme, so we were straight into the big questions of the day.
Gillian: ‘We’re going to cover a lot in 20 odd minutes – so I’m thinking we begin by looking at where the gaps are regarding potential, why they exist and THEN what to do about them.
So explain that …the gap between our potential as a human and what we believe we can do’.
Wow!
No gentle warm-up here. Fortunately I went through the same set-up routine I use before any webinar, conference or key-note speech to ensure I am in my high performance zone and ready to get off to a strong start (essential to deliver to my full potential 😉. As a side question, what do you do before any key activity? How do you get into your high performance zone? 🤔).
I identified 6 key gaps:
A lack of clarity of vision, purpose and goals. This means we drift and meander through life and business.
Our mindset and belief system. For some of us, our inner critic dominates our self-talk, for others its our inner champion. I still love the age old quote: ‘if you say you can or you can’t your are probably right.’
Our attitude and approach to change. Do you see change as an opportunity or a threat? Take Chat GPT………..will it take your job away or free you up from low value activities so you can focus on the things that make you unique and add most value to others? For those who know my work, when was the last time you stepped out of the cave (aka your comfort zone?)
How we use time. Does time manage you or do you manage time? Those who are ruthless priorities and who have created a high performance diary control time, focus on what really matters most and get more of the right things done.
Having a growth mindset, which not only means learning from others, ongoing self and team development but also reviewing what you have done to seek continuous improvement. It is about improving all you do as well as finding the new. In essence, winners debrief more than the average.
Creating your personal success system. I am convinced those of us who create a series of winning habits, routines and frameworks move far more quickly in the direction of our potential. It’s #whatwinnersdo 🦅
In future articles, I will go deeper into these areas.
👉Please feel free to message me with your own thoughts. What do you believe we need to do to move in the direction of our potential? What holds you back? What’s stops you? Where do you need help?
