Andy - my "plunge" was retiring "early" to focus on wife and child and writing a book. I did not need anyone else to tell me, "Play it safe, you don't want to fail at this and then you can't feed your family," because I told myself that, over and over. It locked me up. Finally, my wife asked me, "What's the worst than can happen?" After a few more rounds of questions, my answer was, "I go back to doing what I was before. That door will not close." Not a bad consequence. It was this answer that pushed me over the edge, and I gave my notice the next day. I have absolutely no regrets.

Eric, I absolutely love this - both the questions and also the 'why?' behind the decision to leave your corporate job early. When we were talking about moving to Australia from the UK we used the 'what's the worse that can happen?' along with 'what's the best that can happen?' to help us make our choice.

What did we believe was the worst that could happen? We go for 2 years and for whatever reason it doesn't work out. We, as a family, have experienced a different lifestyle/culture, been to lots of new places bringing lots of new experiences and then we go back. As you say, not a bad consequence.

Always better to take action and then you can always take another one!
